The Anne Weymouth Deirup Collection on Desegregation of Berkeley Schools, 1954-1979, consists of reports, newsletters, pamphlets and materials relating to the integration of Berkeley public schools and the fight for racial justice and social change. The collection includes Deirup's correspondence, notes, and statements made at public meetings regarding education, integration of schools, and student rights. The collection includes publications from local community organizations, parent-teacher associations, and the Berkeley Unified School District.

The materials are arranged alphabetically by subject.

Biographical / historical:

Anne Weymouth Deirup (1918-2003), dedicated activist for social change, worked to improve public education in the Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) from the 1950s through the 1970s. She was an outspoken advocate for school integration, rights of students, and racial justice. She was active in Berkeley politics promoting racial and social equality and represented the rights of school children as an active member of the Parent Teacher Association and BUSD planning committees. In such work, Deirup collected materials documenting these efforts; these materials now make up the Anne Weymouth Deirup Collection on Desegregation of Berkeley Schools.

In 1960, she was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee, declined to answer any questions, and delivered the following message:

"I consider the members of this committee to be dedicated people, and I would very much like to cooperate with this committee. But...I'm even more convinced that you're dedicated to the destruction of the freedom of thought, the freedom to speak and of assembly and of association. You are dedicated to the preservation of white supremacy and of segregation and of lynchings.

"I, too, am a dedicated, principled individual, dedicated to the preservation of democracy, freedom of thought and association, equality and dignity, for all our people! I am dedicated to the promotion of better education for all of our children. And for peace!"

The Anne Weymouth Deirup Collection on Desegregation of Berkeley Schools was purchased by The Bancroft Library from Noyo Hill House on August 18, 2001.
