Description
Dorothy Huttenback (1896-1987) was the manager of the Music Guild of Los Angeles (1952- ), which brought well-known chamber
music ensembles and artists to the Wilshire Ebell Theater. She served for 33 years as president of the organization. The collection
consists of correspondence between Huttenback and various persons in the music world, some photographs and ephemera.
Background
Dorothy Alice Marcuse was born on October 30, 1896 in San Francisco, California; her mother took her to Berlin in 1907, where
she was rejected entry into the Berlin Conservatory because of her youth; composer Engelbert Humperdinck, one of the audition
jury, helped take responsibility for her further musical education; she played on the concert stage until 1922, when she married
Dr. Otto Huttenback; with the rise of Hitler, the Huttenbacks moved to London in 1933, and with the threat of war, moved again
in 1939 to California; in 1952 she became the manager of the Music Guild of Los Angeles, which brought well-known chamber
music ensembles and artists to the Wilshire Ebell Theater; served for 33 years as president of the organization; she died
in April, 1987 in Santa Monica, California.
