    Abstract: Stephen James Sedgwick (1820- ) was a member of the Photographic Corps of the Union Pacific Railroad. He took photographs for a history of the railroad's the route west of the Missouri River. His experience led to a series of lectures and exhibitions throughout the eastern U.S. The collection consists of Sedgwick's papers and correspondence.

    Biography

    Sedgwick was born in 1820; he became a teacher in the New York City public schools, lecturer in natural history, and photographer who compiled genealogical materials on the Sedgwick family; in 1865 he joined the Photographic Corps of the Union Pacific Railroad and tranversed the route west of the Missouri River, shooting photographs for a history of the region; the experience led to a series of lectures and exhibitions throughout the eastern U.S.

    Scope and Content

    Collection consists of the papers and correspondence of Professor Stephen James Sedgwick. Includes materials from his illustrated lecture courses on the geography and geology of the Union Pacific Railroad route and the American West.
