Financial Records 33590

Scope and Contents

Much of this original series was returned to the Westerners due to possible sensitive financial information (i.e. personal checks), and its lack of relevancy to the organization's records as a whole. Banking statements, expense records, and treasurers' reports are part of this series and reflect some of the business activities of the organization.

"Branding Iron" Publication Records 33591 1947-2019

Scope and Contents

The Branding Iron is the quarterly historical publication of the Los Angeles Corral of The Westerners. It began in 1947 as The Brand Book, but after five issues was re-named The Branding Iron. It features articles on the history of Los Angeles, Southern California, and the West, along with book reviews, and news about the Corral and its members. Many of the articles were written by noted scholars and local historians. The early numbering is not consecutive because other Corral publications including some Keepsakes, were originally included along with the quarterly. This series comprises the publications themselves, along with correspondence and sales information related to its publishing.

Photographs 1948-2009

Scope and Contents

This rather large series is comprised of a few formal portraits of Westerner personalities, but the bulk of it is candid "activity" photographs of Westerners at various fandangos, rendezvous, field trips, etc. Many of the photographs were credited to Ken Pauley, Glen Dawson, Frank Q. Newton, Jr., and Iron Eyes Cody-- but most of the photographs were not labeled with the names of the photographer. The subseries of slides appear to all have been the provenance of Frank Q. Newton, Jr. who also kept detailed logbooks of his images with technical photography/ camera data. Additional photographs are in scrapbooks in the Scrapbooks series.

Westerners Publications 1947-2019

Scope and Contents

The chief publication of the L.A. Corral is the Brand Book, of which there are twenty-three as of 2019. The published hard-bound copies are in this series, along with a few other works published by the society. Also of interest is a book authored by Nicholas A. Curry and Stuart F. Robinson titled Glen Dawson at 100 (2012), Dawson being one of the earliest founders of the L.A. Corral. Like his father, Ernest Dawson, Glen was a mountain climber, antiquarian bookseller, publisher, historian, and Sierra Club president. In 1990, Glen Dawson was instrumental in assisting the FBI with the conviction of Stephen Blumberg, a thief who had compulsively stolen rare books from at least 327 libraries. As an expert witness, he testified for the U.S. Government at Blumberg's trial that 271 items taken from the Connecticut State Library were worth over $225,000. Dawson is a resident of Pasadena, California, and celebrated his 100th birthday in June 2012.

Audiovisual Materials

Scope and Contents

The materials in this series are grouped together due to physical format. The DVDs and audiocassette tapes are primarily of speaker presentations at monthly meetings or "round-ups." The CDs are chiefly of images and text used in the Branding Iron and other publications. Most of the titles were copied just as they appear on the tapes or disks, unless there was an obvious spelling error that could be corrected.

John W. Robinson Files

Biographical Note

John W. Robinson, a prominent western historian and mountaineer, was born in Long Beach, California in 1929. He received his B.A. from the University of Southern California in 1951 and his M.A. from California State University, Long Beach in 1966. He taught school in Orange County for 35 years and was well-known for his trail guides and histories of the mountains of Southern California. In 1992, Robinson received the Donald H. Pfluegar Award from the Historical Society of Southern California, for excellence in writing local history. For best journal articles in 1990 and 1994, he received the Westerners International "Coke" Wood award which recognizes outstanding monographs or articles based on individual research, personal knowledge, or family records. In 2005, the Historical Society of Southern California presented Robinson with the Fellows Award medallion, honoring "exceptional lifetime achievements that have brought distinction to history."

Scope and Contents

This series consists of the large collection of research files that Robinson maintained and used in the writing of his many books and trail guides. The subject files are comprised of articles, drafts, news clippings, and some photographs kept in their original arrangement which was basically geographical. The collection of photographs in this series is also organized by geographic region, the bulk of them being of the San Bernardino Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains. The third subseries consists of a collection of maps-- folded road maps as well as large rolled maps-- chiefly of Southern California, but also encompassing some areas of Northern California (i.e. Yosemite) and other areas of the country (Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, etc.)

Locations of Related Materials

Some of John W. Robinson's other photographs, maps, and manuscript materials can be found at the following locations: The Idyllwild Area Historical Society (www.idyllwildhistory.org/index.html); the Sherman Library & Gardens (www.slgardens.org); and the A.K. Smiley Public Library in Redlands (www.akspl.org).
