Scope and content:

The majority of the series contains files on civil lawsuits in which Manes was the primary attorney representing clients who were victims of police brutality and misconduct in Los Angeles County. Cases in this series date from 1976 to 2006. Documents include legal briefs, depositions, court proceedings, correspondence, pre-trial motions, interview transcripts, newspaper clippings, handwritten notes on legal paper, receipts and invoices, and exhibit files with photos, police reports and logs, and other legal paperwork. Also included are audio-cassette recordings of witness statements in a few of Manes' larger cases, printed copies of historic cases that Manes likely reviewed in preparation for trial, and criminal case files in which Manes acted as legal counsel for the defendant. Restricted materials such as medical and psychiatric evaluations, receipts, and official hospital records, as well as some photos, are unavailable to the public.
