Abstract: Franklin Prescott Rolfe (1902- ) was a professor and administrator at UCLA. He was a English professor (1932-70), chairman
of the department, (1944-48), dean of the division of humanities (1947-61), and dean of the College of Letters and Science
(1961-70), emeritus dean of the College of Letters and Science (1970), and academic assistant to the executive vice chancellor
(1971). The collection consists of teaching materials, correspondence, rare bookdealers' lists and newspaper clippings.

Biography
Rolfe was born on November 15, 1902 in Concord, New Hampshire; BS, Dartmouth College, 1924; AM (1925) and Ph.D (1931), Harvard
University; instructor of English, Stanford University, 1925-27; Sheldon travelling fellow, Harvard University, 1931-32; from
instructor to professor of English (1932-70), chairman of the department, (1944-48), dean of the division of humanities (1947-61),
and dean of the College of Letters and Science (1961-70), UCLA; in 1970 he became emeritus dean of the College of Letters
and Science, and in 1971, academic assistant to the executive vice chancellor; co-author with Majl Ewing and Llewellyn M.
Buell,
A guide to better writing (1940); research interests in the history of prose fiction and Victorian literature.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of teaching materials, including syllabi, reading lists, and lecture notes; notes and transcriptions,
mostly typed; note cards; correspondence; rare bookdealers' lists; and newspaper clippings.
