Bing Crosby Show 1947-10-01. In the 1980s, while Ososke was working at Ampex in the Standard Tape Lab, he made a transfer of the original tape. This recording is very important historically as it was the first radio program to air nationally in the U.S. that was recorded and edited on tape. To assuage fears of the tape breaking during airing, the actual broadcast was from discs (called electrical transcriptions or ETs) made from the tapes.

Philco Radio Time with Bing Crosby Aired 1947-10-01

It is believed to have been recorded in August 1947. It was recorded in Hollywood, probably at what became the ABC Radio Network Station.

This was following the divestiture of the Blue Network from NBC (the Red Network) which became ABC.

Crosby did not want to perform his shows live at the time of broadcast. During the 1946-1947 season, Crosby and his team used disc recordings (electrical transcriptions) to record his shows. The Hooper ratings suffered due to the relatively poor quality of the ETs and this loss of quality was reportedly audible even on table top radios.

Tape recording became available at an opportune time for Crosby and his 1947-1948 season was the first nationally broadcast show to be recorded on tape. In the early days of the useage of tape, ETs were still made for the actual broadcast, as the engineers did not trust the old, frequently spliced German tape for actual on-air use.
