Background

Scope and content:

Historical records, administrative files, meeting materials, newsletters, articles, program files, material from the SANE Nuclear Freeze campaign, 2 volumes of signatures of an appeal to Soviet General Secretary Gorbachev and President Reagan, and 3 posters.

Biographical / historical:

The Sacramento Chapter of Peace Action evolved out of the national Peace Action organization. Peace Action originally comprised the combined forces of SANE and FREEZE or SANE/FREEZE; two anti-nuclear proliferation groups. Sacramento-Yolo Peace Action organized local peace demonstrations. A comparable peace organization originating in the Sacramento Area was Grandmothers for Peace.

Sacramento/Yolo Peace Action referred to as Sacramento Area Peace Action is a chapter of the national organization Peace Action. Peace Action developed from two anti-nuclear proliferation groups, SANE and The Freeze in 1993. Peace Action is a grassroots peace network with affiliates and chapters throughout the country that focuses on educating the public and activating constitutents in order to create responsible US policies.

Acquisition information:
The Sacramento/Yolo Peace Action Chapter records were given to the CSUS Special Collections and Unviersity Archives by Winifred Detwiler.
Custodial history:

The Sacramento/Yolo Peace Action Chapter assembled these records over many years as part of their effort to promote anti-nuclear involvement worldwide. The records were handed over to the CSUS Special Collections and University Archives in 2002.
