Scope and content:

In 1938 Arthur Brown, Jr. was hired as the campus's Supervising Architect, overseeing the architectural and aesthetic direction of the buildings and campus plan at UC Berkeley. As Supervising Architect, Brown oversaw the design and construction of several campus buildings, including the Women's Dormitory (1938-1942), later named Stern Hall, the Forestry Building (1946-1948), later named Mulford Hall, and an unbuilt Little Theater project (1938-1942). Brown himself also designed several structures for the Berkeley campus, many during his tenure as Supervising Architect, including the Class of 1910 Bridge (1910); Student Infirmary Building (1930), later Cowell Hospital; Administration Building (1941), later named Sproul Hall; the Emergency Classroom Building (1941), later named Minor Hall; the 184" Cyclotron Buildings (1940); and his final building project, the Doe Library Annex (1946-1949) later home of the Bancroft Library. Brown was eventually asked to resign as UC Berkeley's Supervising Architect by the UC Regents in 1948, but not before detailing campus plans that would carry John Galen Howard's original plan through the subsequent twenty years of expansion. Brown's suggestions were not carried out and the Regents eliminated the position of Supervising Architect for the campus.
