Gustave E. Von Grunebaum (1909-1972) was a professor of history and founder and director of the Near Eastern Center at UCLA (1957- ), and a noted scholar of Arabic, Persian, and Turkish studies. The collection consists of von Grunebaum's research notes, manuscripts, correspondence, and administrative and professional files.

Scope and content:

Collection consists of research notes, manuscripts, correspondence, and administrative and professional files of UCLA professor G.E. von Grunebaum. Includes handscript and carbon copies of articles, lectures, teaching notes, and ongoing research including incompleted studies of pre-Islamic poetry, dream literature, and the process of acculturization. Also includes drafts on the concept of a center for Near Eastern Studies.

Biographical / historical:

Von Grunebaum was born September 1, 1909 in Vienna, Austria; Dr. Phil., University of Vienna, 1931; post-doctoral fellowship, University of Berlin, 1932-33; leader of extension institute, Oriental Institute, Vienna, 1936-38; came to the U.S. in 1938; assistant professor of Arabic and Islamic studies (1938-42) and chairman of the Department of Arabic (1942-43), Asia Institute, New York; assistant professor (1943-46), associate professor (1946-49), and professor of Arabic (1949-57), University of Chicago; in 1957, became professor of history and founder and director of the Near Eastern Center, UCLA; was noted scholar of Arabic, Persian, and Turkish studies, and publications include Medieval Islam: a study in cultural orientation (1946) and Islam: essays in the nature and growth of a cultural tradition (1955); he died on February 27, 1972.
