Stanley Fleishman (1920- ) was a lawyer specializing in defending the civil rights of authors, publishers and distributors, especially those accused of violating obscenity laws. He argued free speech cases 11 times before the Supreme Court, was involved in constitutional law and civil rights litigation on behalf of the disabled, and was counsel of record for Doctors for AIDS Research and Education. The collection consists of erotic publications collected by Stanley Fleishman in connection with his legal activities defending those accused of violating obscenity laws.

Collection consists of erotic publications collected by Stanley Fleishman in connection with his legal activities defending those accused of violating obscenity laws. Includes periodicals, newspaper clippings, comic books, newspapers, paperback books, ephemera files, posters, and a small amount of correspondence. Includes nudist publications and some material from Denmark.

Biographical / historical:

Fleishman was born in 1920; attended Columbia University School of Law; admitted to New York bar in 1945; specialized in defending the civil rights of authors, publishers and distributors, especially those accused of violating obscenity laws; successfully defended the bookstore prosecuted for selling Henry Miller's book, Tropic of Cancer; argued free speech cases 11 times before the Supreme Court; since 1979 has been a partner in the Los Angeles firm Fleishman, Fisher & Moest; later involved in constitutional law and civil rights litigation on behalf of the disabled, and was counsel of record for Doctors for AIDS Research and Education.
