Biography

William Struzenberg (May 12, 1965 - April 6, 1998) was a graphic design artist. He died in 1998 of an AIDS-related illness. Struzenberg also directed several gay pornographic films. His photography was exhibited in galleries in Santa Cruz among other places in the Bay Area. He designed many protest signs, stickers and posters, for AIDS activist groups, clubs and other queer-oriented events. Struzenberg was a member of ACT/UP Golden Gate and ACT NOW.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection contains graphic design materials, papers, newsletters, memos and artifacts that reflect Edward Struzenberg's AIDS activism in ACT UP Golden Gate and ACT NOW. It also includes personal papers and materials related to his work as a director of pornographic films.

Arrangement

The William Struzenberg papers are organized into three series: Series 1. Organizations; Series 2. Notes/Ephemera; and Artifacts.
Series 1. Organizations, 1988-1992 Extent: 10 folders History of ACT NOW, Graphic Design Materials, This series contains graphic design materials created by Struzenberg for ACT UP Golden Gate and ACT UP San Francisco, papers, and newsletters, papers reflecting the structure and processes of ACT UP Golden Gate, agendas for meetings, proposal for media relations committee, info gathered about the "Castro Police Riot," info gathered about the epidemic, posters, notes, stickers, information on planning for protests at the 6h International AIDS Conference including forged press passes created by Struzenberg, material from various other ACT Up chapters in the Bay area and California, personal papers, including preparation for the filming of a pornographic film and other material related directing pornography.
Series 2. Notes/Ephemera, 1988-1992 Extent: 2 folders This series includes materials relating to Struzenberg's role as a director of gay pornography as well as miscellaneous graphic design ephemera.
Series 3. Artifacts, c. 1990 1 item This series consists of an example of Struzenberg's art work; a prototype of a hand silk-screened T-shirt ACT UP/San Francisco T-Shirt (located in Box 80 of GLBTHS t-shirt collection)
