Historical Background
Leonard Caum Moffitt was the campus-community planner at the University of California,
Irvine, (1962-1965) as well as the author of several books about the planning of communities
including the UC Irvine campus, the city of Irvine and Orange County, California.
Moffitt was appointed to the position of campus-community planner by Daniel G. Aldrich, UC
Irvine's first chancellor. He worked closely with architects, Irvine Company employees and
UC administrators during the planning and construction of the UC Irvine campus.
After initial planning of the campus was complete, Chancellor Aldrich commissioned Moffitt
to study the rapid growth of Orange County during 1950s and 1960s. The published book that
resulted from Moffitt's research is titled,
Community and
Urbanization: Orange County, California.
