    Administrative history

The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health was created in 1960, by an ordinance of the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, upon recommendation of the Mental Health Advisory Board. The purpose of the new Department was to operate under the provisions of the Short-Doyle Act, with an initial budget of $1,000,000. The Department has continued to grow and now stands as one of the larger in the nation.

    Scope and Content

The bulk of the material in this collection consists of studies, reports, and other publications that the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health has either issued or commissioned. The collection holds material dating from the Department's creation in 1960 through 1992. Under the series "Publications," and in box 5, folder 1, can be found a draft copy of a County Mental Health response program to natural disasters and "civil unrest." This, as the draft makes clear, was written after the riots of 1992.

    Arrangement

The series "Publications" was established to describe the chief part of the collection. To describe the character of the other material in this collection the catch-all title "Correspondence, Memoranda, and Forms" was established.
