Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of various pictures and documents from the Stockton Air Field between 1943 and 1944. The documents are useful in describing life at the Air Field and as a member of the Woman's Army Corp during WWII. The collection also includes a microfilm selection of the Salm Papers at the Southern Historical Collection, University of North Carolina Library, Chapel Hill.

Biographical / historical:

Stockton Air Field began as a garrison for the 68th Air Base group in 1940, and served as a training installation within the Air Force West Coast Training Center, a collection of eleven western states air-cadet training facilities, until 1945. In 1945 the site became a logistical hub for the Air Force, causing increased air traffic for the area. In 1946, the government released the Air Field to the City of Stockton, who converted the area into the Stockton Municipal Airport. The field was renamed the Stockton Metropolitan Airport in 1964. Mary Salm served with the Women's Army Corps (WAC) from 1943 to 1945 at the Air Force Advanced Flying School Stockton Field. She discharged with the rank Sergeant in 1945.
