Background
The Bay Area Physicians for Human Rights (BAPHR) is a physicians' organization devoted to improving health care for gays,
lesbians and bisexuals. Founded in the homophobic climate of 1977, BAPHR also provides support and information to health
care professionals. BAPHR spawned a national organization, American Association of Physicians for Human Rights (AAPHR) in
1981. AAPHR then came to be called the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA).
