    Scope and Content of Collection

The collection contains an undated note and a printed speech, "The Fanaticism of the Democratic Party," delivered by the Hon. Owen Lovejoy, of Illinois, to the U.S. House of Representatives, Feb. 21, 1859, in which he takes a strong abolitionist stand and states that he has indeed harbored fugitive slaves.
