The California Transportation Company ledger, 1894-1903, (SAFR 21339, HDC 1614) consists of one bound ledger of accounts of business at river ports for steamers and barges owned by Captains A. Nelson and A. Anderson.
The ledger contains accounting information regarding the steamers: PRIDE OF THE RIVER, ONWARD, CONSTANCE, AURORA, SONOMA, RELIEF, IPELTON, SANTA MONICA, ALVIA, ONISBO and the ECLIPSE; barges: ORIENT, CENTENNIAL, STOCKTON, MANILLA, BESSIE, MINNIE, ANNA, YUKON, and the dredge RYDE. Other accounting details include stockholder names, property, cash, expenses, gains and losses, repairs, shipyard construction at Wood Island, and transactions for the following wharfs: Brannon, Grand Island, Isleton, Martinez, Rio Vista, and Walnut Grove, along with Walkers, Terminous and Duttons landings. The collection has been processed to the collection level and is open for use without restrictions.

Agency History: The California Transportation Company was owned and operated by Captains A. E. Anderson and A. Nelson and ran steamboats on the surrounding rivers of the San Francisco Bay. The California Transportation Company eventually merged with the Sacramento Navigation Company and the Fay Transportation Company and became the River Lines Company. It is possible that Captain A. E. Anderson is Arvid Anderson and Captain A. Nelson is Aksel Nelson.

This item was donated to San Francisco Maritime Museum, transferred to Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1978 and transferred to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park in 1989.
