Administrative Information
Acquisition Information
The collection was formed from an accumulation of unarranged portraits already in University Archives beginning in about 1964
and continues to be added to. The sources of the portraits are varied and include academic departments, administrative offices,
public relations departments, and individual gifts.
Scope and Content of Collection
This section of the University Archives pictorial collection consists mainly of photographs of named individuals (and sometimes
groups), often but not always in formal photographs, dating from the early days of the university's history. The majority
of the photographs are of University of California, Berkeley, figures, which includes people from the systemwide Office of
the President.
While this section is the most comprehensive resource for portraits, researchers should be aware that photographs taken in
various ceremonies (such as Charter Day or Commencement) or in identified buildings (an instructor in a lecture hall) were
generally not filed in this section of the pictorial collection, so other portions of the collection can yield additional
images of named individuals. The same holds true for photographs filed in subject groupings in the collection, such as various
sports or photographs of the Free Speech Movement, for example. University Archives has some sections of works of individual
photographers in which still further photographs of individuals may be found.
Note that item numbers 1100-1999 were skipped in numbering.
