Biography
George A. Leidal was a reporter working for the Daily Pilot, a newspaper published in Newport Beach, California. His residences
included Irvine, California and later Key West, Florida.
History
The City of Irvine is a master-planned community located in Orange County, California. It was designed by architect William
Pereira and developed by The Irvine Company. The first General Plan for the future city was issued in 1964, and Irvine was
incorporated on December 28, 1971.
Scope and Content of Collection
This collection comprises files of George A. Leidal, a reporter employed by the Daily Pilot newspaper in Newport Beach, California.
Leidal reported on the planning, incorporation, and early development of the City of Irvine, a master-planned community designed
by architect William Pereira and developed by the Irvine Company. The materials are principally agenda packets of the Irvine
City Council and Planning Commission, accompanied by some other files of other city and local area committees. Most agenda
packets include meeting agendas, minutes of previous meetings, and background documents, such as city ordinances and planning
documents that correspond to individual agenda items. Also included are handwritten and/or typewritten notes taken by Leidal
that provide his perspectives on how the city was established and the issues that dominated early planning discussions. File
dates were assigned by Leidal and generally correspond to the date of the relevant City Council meeting; in a few cases the
file date is inaccurate. Several files document the first City Council elections, which were held in 1971. Irvine was incorporated
on December 28, 1971, and the files include the first City Council meeting held on that date.
