Drawings and printed proofs for Specimens of Antient [sic] Sculpture, Series I. undated, 1832, 1834

Physical Description: 23.6 Linear Feet (11 boxes)

Scope and Contents note

This series comprises 253 drawings and prints, including head- and tail-pieces, and twenty drawings for plates that are not part of the final publication. Note that the old spelling "antient" appears on the title page of the book.
There are no drawings or prints for plates no. 4, 21, 24, 27, 30, 31, 52, 54, 60, 63, 65, and 70 in vol. 1; and plates no. 3, 25, and 46 in vol. 2. Included are an unsigned manuscript note, and a wrapper.
The prints and drawings are annotated with the title of the final publication (correctly spelled), along with volume and plate numbers. Some contemporary evidence of renumbering of the sequence of plates is preserved. Other inscriptions include drafts for captions and dedicatory notes, dimensions, notes of repair, locations, and other comments. Most are inscribed with the name John Samuel Agar. Other engravers and draftsmen whose names are inscribed are William Bromley, Edward Francis Burney, George James Corbould, Henry Corbould, Franz Gabriel Fiessinger, William Finden, Alfred Robert Freebairn, Henry Howard, Edward Scriven, William Skelton, and Niccoló Schiavonetti.
The prints are proofs for plates in the second volume, with frequently several proofs for a plate present. The presence of multiple proofs with various annotations provides a glimpse into the process of selecting and captioning of the plates. Only four prints are states after letters.
The majority of drawings are wash drawings. Most of the prints are stipple engravings; only a few are executed as line engravings. The drawings are undated. Most of the proofs are also undated, except for four dated 1832, and four dated 1834. These surviving drawings and proofs for the second volume show how much of the work was completed before Knight's death.
The drawings for plates not included in the final publication are often unfinished and also not annotated. Two are inscribed with the names of Agar and Henry Corbould. Two are hand colored.
Arranged in the order of plates in the final publication.

Letters and drafts by William Gell, Series IV. 1806-1834, undated

Container Summary: 11 items 1 folder

Scope and Contents note

Included are 6 letters to Sir Henry Englefield, Secretary of the Society of Dilettanti, written during the 1812-1813 expedition Gell undertook to Greece and Asia Minor. Gell arrived at Zante in early 1812 and then proceeded to Athens where he had difficulty obtaining a safe passage to Smyrna. During this interval he filled his time by excavating and drawing at Eleusis. Gell's drawings were later published in various volumes of Antiquities of Ionia.
The letters date from Jan 11 to Jul 22, 1812. Gell writes about archaeological work at Eleusis and Corinth, frequently mentions drawings he made at these sites, and comments on the newly discovered Aeginetan sculptures he has had an opportunity to see. The letters are illustrated with small sketches in ink.
A letter written by Gell in 1834 from Naples to Lady Blessington in London concerns their common literary interests. Also present are five bank drafts by Gell, dated from 1806 to 1809 and addressed to Marsh, Sibbald & Co., Bankers in London.
