Biographical/Historical note
The original Jan Baum-Iris Silverman Gallery opened on March 15, 1977 in Los Angeles. Following the death of Iris Silverman,
Jan Baum reopened the Gallery under her own name in 1981, continuing the gallery's focus on contemporary and African art,
with a particular emphasis on California artists. Baum retired and closed the gallery in 2007.
Scope and Content of Collection
The Jan Baum Gallery records document the relationships between the gallerists, artists, museums, and collectors through extensive
correspondence and exhibition materials. The archive also contains photographic materials, notes, price lists, artists' statements,
loan agreements, and audiovisual materials documenting artworks and installations. Among the artists represented in the archive
are Chris Burden, Bella Feldman, Sylvia Glass, Kathryn Jacobi, Roberto Gil de Montes, Jim Morphesis, Peter Plagens, Darren
Waterston, and Takako Yamaguchi. Files on Betye Saar and her daughters Alison Saar and Lezley Saar are particularly extensive.
Access
Open for use by qualified researchers, except unreformatted audiovisual materials.
Acquisition Information
Gift of Jan Baum Gallery in 2008.
Arrangement
Organized in three series. Series I. Artist files, 1967-2007; Series II. Group exhibitions, 1994-2007; Series III. Administrative
files, 1984-2007.
Processing Information note
In 2008 Emmabeth Nanol re-housed the archive and created a box list. In 2009 she further processed and arranged some of the
materials and expanded the box list into a preliminary finding aid under the supervision of Andra Darlington. The arrangement
of the archive is based on the original order of the collection as it was received from the Jan Baum Gallery, though it required
some refinement. Collection-level notes are based on curatorial acquisition documentation.
Separated Materials note
