    Biography/History

Ella Foy O'Gorman was born July 2, 1862 in Los Angeles, California. She became a school teacher in Washington and later did genealogical research and wrote books, including Ancestry of the Foy Family and Allied Families (1932) and Calverts of Virginia (1947). O'Gorman died in June 1965.

    Scope and Content

The bulk of the collection consists of materials compiled or created by O'Gorman for her genealogical research, including ancestry charts, family trees, and coats of arms; correspondence; historical/government documents; handwritten looseleaf notes (largely undated) and notebooks; published works and related materials; newspaper clippings; and photographs. These materials range in date from 1867-1958. Most of the 19th century material consists of photographs (including one daguerreotype) of Foy's relatives. There are also some copies of pre-20th century documents (e.g., census records, wills, death certificates) obtained by O'Gorman in the 1930s-1950s. Some of these documents originated in the United Kingdom. Most of the material originated in the United States, particularly Los Angeles (where O'Gorman was born and lived in later life) and Washington (where O'Gorman worked as a school teacher for a time). The remainder of the collection is made up of O'Gorman's personal materials, including correspondence, family members' (including her sister Mary Foy's) writings, government documents, historical association documents, newspaper clippings, notebooks, and photographs. These materials range in date from 1904-1962.

    • Series 1: Genealogical research, 1867-1958
