Abstract: Hubert Howe Bancroft (1832-1918) established a bookselling and publishing business in San Francisco. The collection consists
of engraving plates, portfolios with prints, and editions of Hubert Howe Bancroft's
Book of the Fair and
Book of Wealth. Includes cygne noir edition, author's editions, and sections of the deluxe edition of the
Book of Wealth, and an incomplete 1893 text and an imperfect copy of the
Book of the Fair.

Biography
Hubert Howe Bancroft was born on May 5, 1832 in Granville, Ohio; worked in his brother-in-law's bookstore in Buffalo, New
York, 1848-52; went to California in 1852 and established a bookselling and publishing business in San Francisco; gathered
material on the West, eventually publishing 39 volumes of his works covering the American and Canadian West, Central America,
and Mexico; collected 60,000 volumes of history, manuscripts, and personal narratives, which he donated to the University
of California in 1905; he died on March 2, 1918 in Walnut Creek, California.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of engraving plates, portfolios with prints, and editions of Hubert Howe Bancroft's
Book of the Fair (Chicago and San Francisco, 1893) and
Book of Wealth (published under the title:
Achievements of Civilization: the Book of Wealth ... in New York, 1898). Includes cygne noir edition, author's editions, and sections of the deluxe edition of the
Book of Wealth, and an incomplete 1893 text and an imperfect copy of the
Book of the Fair (10 volumes).
