Campaign materials 96835 1961-1969 1968

Scope and Contents

Richard Nixon's 1968 presidential campaign and election campaign materials subseries contains memorandums, letters, notes, clippings, press releases, transcripts, reports, pamphlets, photographs, ephemera, realia, audiocassettes, and audiotapes, 1961-1969 (bulk 1968), created, collected, and used by Herbert G. Klein and members of his staff during Nixon's 1968 presidential campaign. Included is confidential political and voting data; memorandums from Murray Chotiner, the bulk of which are addressed to H.R. Haldeman, containing campaign information; Klein's notes regarding campaign strategizing; campaign research subject files containing information on the nomination, preparation for the convention, staff biographies, candidate itineraries, and press releases from Miami prior to and during the Convention; press conference and television appearance transcripts; speeches and reprints of articles by Nixon; information and public relations materials for Nixon's Key Issues Committee and its members, his surrogate candidates, and VIP speakers; information from and about the United Citizens for Nixon committee; miscellaneous media and campaign committee files consisting of press releases, clippings, and miscellaneous printed materials; clippings about the campaign organized by state; transcripts of speeches; press releases issued by other organizations; and information on Nelson Rockefeller. The campaign research subject files were compiled by Klein staffer Suzanne Low, who originally grouped public relations files under "Election," "Republican Party," "Nixon," and "Committees." Also included are copies of the Red Book, which contains national demographic data and election information, and was compiled by Klein staffer Margita White; daily press and post-convention schedules; focus group results; contact lists for campaign staff and press; the Nixon Sourcebook, which is a compilation of Nixon's and the Nixon family's biographical information, Nixon speeches, and remarks for use by campaign staff when creating campaign communications. The subseries also contains materials collected by Klein staffer Ginger Savelle, including committee reports, Republican party publications, and miscellaneous pamphlets. Because much of the latter material was collected by different members of Klein's staff, much of it exists in duplicate (and in some cases triplicate) form throughout this subseries (and elsewhere in the collection).

Arrangement

These materials were originally arranged in multiple alphabetical sequences. For ease of use, these alphabetic sequences have been consolidated.

Speeches and speaking engagements, events, and receptions 95125 1969-1973

Scope and Contents

Richard Nixon's presidency speeches and speaking engagements, events, and receptions subseries contains notes, typescripts, schedules, itineraries, clippings, photographs, correspondence, audiotapes, audiocassettes, and motion pictures, 1969-1973, collected, created, and used by Herbert G. Klein and his staff for the creation and delivery of Klein's speeches, and to organize and coordinate his multiple speaking engagements and the events and receptions he attended in the course of his official duties as White House Director of Communications. Included are Klein's handwritten notes for various speeches and public appearances; thank you letters; correspondence regarding both accepted and regretted invitations; audio (cassette and reel-to-reel) tapes of Klein and Nixon speeches and appearances as well as audio recordings of press conferences and remarks by other members of the Nixon administration; films of Klein appearances, primarily on Meet the Press and Face the Nation; travel and logistical information for Klein's speaking engagements and appearances; and notes and information for selected 1972 election appearances. A large number of Klein's speaking engagements were before members of Sigma Delta Chi, the national journalism society (referred to by Klein as "SDX"), and national and local broadcast and print journalism professional organizations.

Arrangement

This subseries is arranged by date and by location. Klein kept separate files for trip logistics and speaking engagements which have been collocated; while most were generally arranged by date, some were arranged by location (state), and this arrangement has been maintained.

Technical requirements

Audio cassette, reel-to-reel, and projection equipment is required to listen to/view materials in this series.
