    Biography

    Robert Lloyd Kelley was born on June 2, 1925 in Santa Barbara, California. After serving in World War II, he completed a B.A. at the University of California, Santa Barbara College, then an M.A. and Ph.D. at Stanford University. During his studies at Stanford he served in the Korean War. Kelley became UCSB history faculty in 1955 and taught for 38 years until his retirement in 1993. He received many honors, including Guggenheim, NEH, Woodrow Wilson, and Fulbright fellowships, and is credited with being a founder of the discipline of public history. His books include Gold Versus Grain: The Hydraulic Mining Controversy in California's Sacramento Valley (1959), The Transatlantic Persuasion: the Liberal-Democratic Mind in the Age of Gladstone (1969), The Cultural Pattern in American Politics: The First Century (1979), and Transformations : UC Santa Barbara, 1909-1979 (1981). Kelley died in Santa Barbara on August 29, 1993.
