- Biographical / historical:
-
Myron Shelley served on the Board of Directors for the Hebrew Home for the Aged, as well as serving on its Campaign Committee for fundraising.
The San Diego Hebrew Home for the Aged, whose records are the greatest part of this collection, is a beneficiary agency of the United Jewish Federation of San Diego County, and was founded to care for the elderly members of the Jewish communities of San Diego. The first Jewish Home for the Aged in San Diego was founded in 1944 with ten beds by the Jolly Sixteen, a women's social and benevolent group. A much larger facility opened in 1952, in partnership with the Jewish Community Center on 54th Street and in 1989 the Hebrew Home expanded and moved to northern San Diego County.
Over the years, the Hebrew Home for the Aged has conducted many campaigns to raise funds for equipment, personnel, and more bed capacity as needs arise. It provides a full range of services including medical care, supervision of acute and chronic illnesses, personal daily living needs, psychological and social needs, as well as recreational activity. As of 2009, the Hebrew Home for the Aged, known as the Seacrest Village Retirement Communities, is located on two sites in San Diego's North County -- one is in the coastal city of Encinitas and the other is in the inland city of Poway.
