Subseries B. Travel Correspondence, 1936-1937

Physical Description: 4 legal size boxes

Scope and Content Note

This subseries includes letters written and received during Frank Wilkinson's travels through the United States, Europe, North Africa and the Middle East in 1936-1937. After graduating UCLA in 1936, Frank Wilkinson along with his friend Del Harter embarked upon this trip, in order to study social and political conditions worldwide. The budget for their travels was $1.00 per day, .30 cents of which they spent on postage. As a result, Frank Wilkinson and Del Harter spent many nights camped out in parks, rode bicycles as transportation, and relied on the kindness of strangers.
The correspondence found here are letters to and from Frank Wilkinson, describing his experiences, thoughts and impressions of all he saw during his travels. The first two boxes of this subseries contain letters written to Frank Wilkinson while he was traveling. These include letters from various friends and family members. There is a significant amount of letters collected from Gilbert Harrison, a good friend of Frank's from UCLA, and Ellinor Hoffmann, daughter of Professor Rolf Hoffmann and Frank's girlfriend at the time. The last two boxes of this subseries contain letters written by Frank Wilkinson. The bulk of these collected letters were written to members of Frank's family, including his parents and siblings; however, there are some letters here written to Jean Benson, Frank Wilkinson's future wife, and Gilbert Harrison. The final items in this subseries are miscellaneous postcards collected by Frank Wilkinson and stamps he collected during his travels.
The correspondence in this subseries has been arranged as closely as possible in the original order established by Frank Wilkinson. The overall order is chronological, but the letters have also been arranged according to author/recipient.
