Biographical Note
The Tebbetts were newspaper people, with close links to Thomas A. Storke (Santa Barbara News-Press). Despite the title of
the collection, much of the material relates to Nathan A. Tebbetts' life. Nathan grew up in Santa Barbara, but worked with
the
San Francisco Examiner for many years, mostly re resort advertising. His father, George P. Tebbetts, founded the SB
Daily and Weekly Independent, and the collection includes financial records of the paper in the 1880s and 1890s.

Collection contains materials previously identified as George P. and Mary Tebbetts memorial collection, SBHC Mss 42. Collection
contains materials previously identified as Nathan A. Tebbets autobiography, Wyles SC 238; Collection contains materials previously
identified as George P. and Mary Tebbetts memorial collection, Mss 163.
Scope and Content
The collection contains manuscripts, including three diaries dating to 1856, 1863, and 1866, correspondence, photographs,
ledgers/account books, scrapbooks, newspapers (include 1883-1885 Santa Barbara
Daily Independent), papers and documents from the
San Francisco Examiner, and a tape and partial transcript of a recording by Nathan A. Tebbetts. Also nine black-and-white photographs of dirigibles,
mostly above San Francisco, including one of the Graf Zeppelin. Artifacts include three Colt revolvers, one framed oil painting,
and two wooden chests, apparently made at the Anna Blake School.
There also are numerous books from the collection, mainly 19th century works relating to California. These have been cataloged
individually and can be searched in the UCSB Library online catalog. Newspapers have been separated to the Special Collections
newspaper shelves.
