    Abstract: Jack Clifford Smith (b.1916) was a reporter for the LA daily news (1946-49), the Los Angeles herald-express (1950-53), and a reporter and rewrite man for the Los Angeles times (1953-58). He was also the author of the “Jack Smith” column beginning in 1958 for Los Angeles times. Several collections of his columns were published including Three coins in the birdbath (1965), Smith on wry; or, The art of coming through (1970), Jack Smith's LA (1980), and How to win a pullet surprise (1982). The collection consists of a printer's copy and galley and page proofs of Smith on wry; or, The art of coming through and the uncorrected galley proofs of Three coins in the birdbath.

    Biography

    Smith was born on August 27, 1916 in Long Beach, California; attended Bakersfield College; copy editor, Honolulu advertiser, 1940-42; reporter for LA daily news (1946-49) and Los Angeles herald-express (1950-53); reporter and rewrite man (1953-58) and author of “Jack Smith” column beginning in 1958 for Los Angeles times; published several collections of his columns, including Three coins in the birdbath (1965), Smith on wry; or, The art of coming through (1970), Jack Smith's LA (1980), and How to win a pullet surprise (1982); also wrote Alive in La La Land (1989); he died on January 9, 1996 in Los Angeles.

    Collection consists of a printer's copy and galley and page proofs of Smith on wry; or, The art of coming through and the uncorrected galley proofs of Three coins in the birdbath by Los Angeles times columnist Jack Smith. Portions of each book appeared in his column.
