    Abstract: Bennet Mills Allen (1887-1963) was a professor of zoology at the University of Kansas (1913) and the Southern Branch of the University of California (1922). The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, clippings, and photos related to Allen's career as a researcher and professor of Zoology, and a manuscript titled, The Bennet family.

    Biography

    Allen was born in Green Castle, Indiana, July 4, 1887; attended De Paul University, and received his PhD from the University of Chicago (1903); he taught Anatomy and Zoology at the University of Wisconsin; became professor of zoology at the University of Kansas, 1913; joined the Southern Branch of the University of California, 1922, and became a professor, and eventually the first chairman, in the department of Zoology; he was part of a small group initiating research on the emerging field of neuroendocrinology; as professor emeritus he pursued research in the UCLA Atomic Energy Project and in 1957, his eightieth birthday, he was awarded an honorary LLD by UCLA; died in 1963 in Los Angeles.

    Collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, clippings, and photos related to Allen's career as a researcher and professor of Zoology. Also includes a bound volume of articles written by Allen and a manuscript titled, The Bennet family.
