Allen was born in Green Castle, Indiana, July 4, 1887; attended De Paul University, and received his PhD from the University of Chicago (1903); he taught Anatomy and Zoology at the University of Wisconsin; became professor of zoology at the University of Kansas, 1913; joined the Southern Branch of the University of California, 1922, and became a professor, and eventually the first chairman, in the department of Zoology; he was part of a small group initiating research on the emerging field of neuroendocrinology; as professor emeritus he pursued research in the UCLA Atomic Energy Project and in 1957, his eightieth birthday, he was awarded an honorary LLD by UCLA; died in 1963 in Los Angeles.
