Abstract: Tom B. Carvey (b.1922) was the first president of the Palos Verdes Democratic Club (1948), secretary of the Democratic State
Central Committee, a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions (1956, 1960, 1964, and 1968), chairman of the first California
Democratic Council State Issues Program, and third president of the California Democratic Council (1961-65). The collection
consists of correspondence, minutes, election campaign literature, publications, clippings, photographs, and tapes related
to California Democratic Party politics between 1948-67 and the California Democratic Council (CDC) during Carvey's years
as president (ca. 1962-65).

Biography
Carvey was born in 1922; attended Stanford University; engineer, Hughes Aircraft Company; first president, Palos Verdes Democratic
Club, 1948; secretary, Democratic State Central Committee; delegate, Democratic National Conventions, 1956, 1960, 1964, and
1968; chairman, first California Democratic Council State Issues Program; third president of the California Democratic Council,
1961-65.
Expanded Biographical Narrative
An aeronautical engineer for Hughes Aircraft Company and graduate of Stanford University, Tom B. Carvey, Jr., began his democratic
Party political activity in 1948 as the first president of the Palos Verdes Democratic Club. His subsequent activities included
serving as secretary of the Democratic State Central Committee, delegate to the 1956, 1960, 1964, and 1968 national conventions,
chairman of the first California Democratic Council State Issues Program, and CDC's third president, 1961-65.
The papers contain correspondence, minutes of CDC Directors' meetings, election campaign literature, various publications
of CDC or relating to issues of interest to CDC, and clippings. In addition to the files on the California Democratic Council,
there is a substantial group of materials on the activities of the Democratic Party in the 46th Assembly District from 1953
to 1960.
The arrangement of the collection is basically chronological with a small group of subject files that are listed alphabetically.
In most cases, headings established by Mr. Carvey or his secretary have been retained for the various folders.
The collection was a gift of Mr. Carvey in November, 1971, and forms with the previously acquired collections of Joseph Wyatt,
Charles Gant, Joyce Fadem, and Knox Mellon, an important research archive documenting California grass roots politics of the
1950's and 1960's.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of correspondence, minutes, election campaign literature, publications, clippings, photographs, and tapes
related to California Democratic Party politics between 1948-67 and the California Democratic Council (CDC) during Carvey's
years as president (ca. 1962-65). Also contains a 16mm. film titled,
Year of decision, Carvey's notebooks from his presidency, and a substantial group of materials related to Democratic Party activities in the 46th Assembly District of California
from 1953-60.
