Series 1: Biographical Information, 1941-2001

Series Description

This portion of the collection includes personal documents, including educational materials and diplomas, personal family photographs, newspaper clippings, and other personal documents chronicling May d’Marie’s life in Washington State, Denver, Germany, France and Sacramento. This includes her married life, educational career, career as a librarian, family history, as well as her participation with the Sacramento Community Housing Project. Of particular note are photographs of Europe in the years after World War II depicting the destructive nature the war had in Germany, France, and Italy. Additionally of interest is a scrapbook created by fellow Community Housing Project member Susan Barnhill chronicling the last years of as resident of the Community Housing Project as well as her battle with cancer, of which she passed away in 2001.

Series 2: Community Activism, 1977-2001

Series Description

May d’ Marie dedicated a substantial part of her life dedicated to peace oriented organizations, including Grandmothers for Peace and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom Auburn Chapter, of which she was a founding member. This portion of the collection includes organizational records including minutes, agendas, budgets, personal correspondence, organization publications and programs, as well as other materials. Additionally, this series includes numerous artifacts including memorabilia, photographs, and plaques and framed awards presented to the WILPF, Auburn chapter. Of note in this collection is May d’Marie’s participation in numerous WILPF events both nationally and internationally, including multiple triennial conferences and the peace train rides to educate people internationally to women’s issues.

This sub-series includes the work that May d'Marie did with the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, including founding a chapter, as well as attendance at numerous national and international events.
