Tree of Life Altar (detail) 1985

General Physical Description note: This series of slides documents the construction of the Tree of Life Altar at the Social and Public Art Resource Center, Los Angeles. 1-2. Detail is of the branches of the Tree of Life, which are filled with ornaments, leaves, a bird's nest, an ear of corn, and other miscellany. There is a circular artwork on the wall above the tree. 3-4. Detail is of the bench in front of the tree, which is set with an image of La Virgen de Guadalupe, Mesoamerican statuettes, paper cutouts, flowers, kachina dolls, feathers, and a small reproduction of Kahlo's Las Dos Fridas. A semicircle of tall candles in front of the bench contains a bowl of red roses. 5. Detail is of an ornament hanging from a branch of the Tree of Life. It is a print or watercolor of a heart with yarn stitching around the outside. 6. Detail is of vegetation leaning against the wall behind the Tree of Life. 7. Detail is of the bottom portion of the altar. 8. Detail is a view from above of the area just in front of the altar, with the covered bench and bowl of roses. 9. Detail is of the bird's nest in the Tree of Life. 10. Detail is of five small dolls leaning against the corner behind the tree of life..
