    Abstract: The Stan Margulies Collection consists of the papers of Stan Margulies. Margulies was a producer of made-for-TV movies and miniseries, including the ratings hits Roots and The Thorn Birds.

    Biographical Note

    Stan Margulies was born in New York City in 1920. He attended New York University, served as a Staff Sargeant in the US Army during World War II and moved to Los Angeles in 1947 to work as a publicist at RKO Pictures. He married his first wife, Lillian, in 1943. They had two sons, Lee and Edward, and a daughter, Lisa. A couple of Margulies' more well-known films include Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines and If It's Tuesday This Must Be Belgium, the latter of which he partnered with David Wolper. Their partnership is best known for producing the miniseries Roots (1977) and The Thorn Birds (1983) and lasted through the production of the miniseries The Mystic Warrior in 1983. They also produced the original film version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971).
    After separating from Wolper, Margulies continued to produce made-for-TV movies and miniseries. He won Emmys for producing Roots, Roots: The Next Generation, and Separate But Equal. In 1993, Margulies married his second wife, Ferne. He passed away in Los Angeles in 2001.

    Scope and Content

    The Stan Margulies Collection consists of Margulies' business and personal papers and dates predominantly from after 1983, when his partnership with David Wolper dissolved. The papers, arranged by project, include scripts, treatments, drafts, budgets and other financial information, cast and crew deal memos, correspondence, notes from the networks on which Margulies' programs aired, location files, shooting schedules, and other files maintained by Margulies while producing made-for-TV movies and miniseries. Margulies' personal papers include photographs, awards and certificates, crew lists and correspondence. The papers of the Stan Margulies Company include business correspondence, tax forms and documents pertaining to Margulies' other business interests.
