    Abstract: This collection contains correspondence, notes, and other material from J. Lloyd Eaton, a physician and book collector whose collection of science fiction, fantasy, and horror publications formed the foundation of the Eaton Science Fiction & Fantasy Collection at UC Riverside. Included in his papers are the index card catalogs Eaton kept documenting his collection, which include his notes on many of the works.

    Processing History

    Processing of the J. Lloyd Eaton papers was completed by undergraduate students from the University of California, Riverside as part of the Special Collections & University Archives Backlog Processing Project started in 2015. This project was funded by the UCR Library and administered by Jessica Geiser, Collections Management Librarian.

    Biographical Note

    J. Lloyd Eaton was born in Berkeley, CA in 1902. He attended UC Berkeley, then UC Medical School, receiving his MD degree in 1928. His specialty was pulmonology (diseases of the lungs). Eaton practiced medicine in the Bay Area until his retirement in 1960. During his life he was an avid book collector, and one of the pioneering SF fans in Northern California. Eaton was personally acquainted with such writers as Anthony Boucher, Ray Bradbury and Robert A. Heinlein, and edited the fanzine Rhodomagnetic Digest.

    Collection Scope and Contents

    This collection contains materials from J. Lloyd Eaton related to his interest in collecting and reviewing science fiction, fantasy, and horror books. Items in the collection include correspondence between Eaton and various book dealers and collectors, ratings Eaton created of various stories and science fiction works, and an interview on Eaton with his wife Gladys Eaton. The collection also includes Eaton's original index card files documenting his book collection, with his comments and notes on many of the titles.
