Abstract: Anna Emily Sumner
(b.1904) was a charter member of the Delta Gamma sorority, woman's page editor for the
Los Angeles Evening Express, a romance novelist, director
of public information for University Extension (1932-66), vice president of the UCLA Alumni
Association (1938-39), a founding member of Gold Shield, the UCLA Affiliates, the Friends of
the UCLA Library, and the UCLA Art Council, and the first woman to receive Alumni
Distinguished Service Award (1962). The collection consists of correspondence, memoranda,
clippings, photographs, and ephemera related to Sumner's association with various UCLA
organizations.

Collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, clippings, photographs, and ephemera
related to Sumner's association with various UCLA organizations. Organizations include: UCLA
Art Council, University Affiliates, University Extension, Gold Shield, and the UCLA Alumni
Association. Also includes a scrapbook of
Los Angeles Express
articles.
Expanded Scope and Content
Collection contains Miss Sumner's files on her UCLA related activities from 1932 to about
1967. During that period she was in charge of Public Information-Press for University
Extension at UCLA. She was also a charter member of the UCLA chapter of Delta Gamma; a
founding member of Gold Shield (a UCLA Service group) and served as its president,
1938-1940. She has been vice-president of the UCLA Alumni Association, president of the Los
Angeles city Panhellenic Council, president of UCLA Affiliates, a board member of the
Friends of the UCLA Library, a founding board member of the UCLA Art council, and a founding
member of the Board of directors of the UCLA Faculty Center.
Prior to working at UCLA, Miss Sumner worked for the
Los Angeles
Express
as a page editor. This period of her life is reflected in the scrapbook of
Express clippings which contains the articles she wrote for
the newspaper.
Organization and Arrangement
The files are arranged alphabetically under the same headings Miss Sumner used. There is,
thus, some duplication of materials and some scattering of closely related materials.
Separated Materials
Several photographs have been removed from the collection, if they were of general interest
rather than specific to Miss Sumner's career. These have been filed in the Department's
Picture Collection (Collection 99) under their subjects.
