Biographical / historical:

Robert Eckles Swain (1875-1961) was a member of the Stanford University Chemistry Department for 41 years. He was born to a pioneer family in Hollister, California, and earned an AB in chemistry from Stanford in 1899. He received an MS and a PhD from Yale University in 1901 and 1904, respectively.
