    Scope and Content of Collection

The Thomas Woody papers include writings, letters, notes, clippings, and other printed matter related to the history of education; education in the United States, the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and elsewhere; Soviet-American cultural relations; and social and political conditions in the Soviet Union during the interwar period.
Thomas Woody was a scholar of the history of education. He authored A History of Women's Education in the United States (1929). His articles on education can be found in the Speeches and Writings, along with typescripts of encyclopedia entries of historical figures in education.
Woody taught for many years at the University of Pennsylvania. His professorial work is documented in the Academic Career File.
The Research Notes contain Woody's extensive notes on monographs and other sources. Since Woody often used scrap paper when typing his notes, the backs of these pages often have fragments of course materials, such as exam sheets or course ratings.
The Subject Files include correspondence, clippings, and notes related to education. Of note is the file titled "Reminiscences," which documents research regarding use of German in public schools in various counties in Pennsylvania, such as Lancaster, Lehigh, and Berks, during the late 1800s. This file includes the memoir of D. S. Domer, which documents public schools in Lancaster county.
The collection includes a well-organized file of Clippings related to education, arranged by country.
