Scope and content:

Collection consists of correspondence files related to Nomland's book business, including his dealings with little presses. Correspondents include George Allen & Unwin, American Philosophic Society, Ashland Poetry Press, Black Sparrow Press, Book Club of California, Brookings Institute, Chatto & Windus, City Lights Books, Dawson's Bookshop, Farm Workers Press, Feminist Press, Gay Book News, Grolier Club, Harvard University Press, Hispanic Society of America, Island Press, Little, Brown & Company, and Monthly Review Press.

Biographical / historical:

Nomland was born on October 28, 1923 in Pasadena, California; attended Pasadena Junior College, Whittier College, and University of Southern California, where he received his MLIS in 1952; AB, MA, Ph.D in Latin American Literature, 1944-50, UCLA; served as architecture-fine arts librarian at University of Southern California, 1952-54; became librarian and associate professor at Los Angeles City College in 1954, serving as president of the academic senate of the college, 1965-66; became a bookseller; wrote Teatro Mexicano Contemporáneo: 1900-1950 (1967).
