Scope and content:

The papers include correspondence, subject files, legal documents and annotated survey maps. There are also correspondence and drafts of his biography of Thomas O. Larkin, entitled From Cowhides to Golden Fleece, which was originally published by Stanford University Press in 1939.

Boxes 1-2 primarily include materials relating to From Cowhides to Golden Fleece. Cartons 1-4 and oversize folders contain survey work, including annotated maps and valuation assessments, arranged alphabetically by title of property.

Biographical / historical:

Reuben L. Underhill was a California land surveyor, based in the San Francisco Bay area. He died in 1955.
