Scope and content:

Contains incomplete set of manuscripts of the winning entries of the James D. Phelan Award. Phelan was a San Francisco native who rose to prominence as a three-term San Francisco mayor. During his lifetime he encouraged and financially aided writers, artists, and musicians, for whom he provided very generously through his will after his death in 1930.
