Information for Researchers
Access Information
NITRATE NEGATIVES ARE CLOSED TO RESEARCH DUE TO HAZARDOUS MATERIALS RESTRICTIONS. These restricted nitrate negatives are housed
in boxes 1-24d, 25b, 26b, 36b-d, 56, and 58-64.
GLASS AND SAFETY FILM NEGATIVES may be used by appointment only: Inquiries regarding these materials should be directed, in
writing, to the Head of Public Services, The Bancroft Library.
Preferred Citation
[Identification of item], Julian P. Graham collection of photographic negatives, BANC PIC 1969.021, The Bancroft Library,
University of California, Berkeley
Alternative Form of Materials Available
Selected boxes of negatives were scanned in their entirety as a test of an experimental workflow project attempting to provide
access to images from nitrate film negatives, a federally-regulated hazardous material that can not be accessed in the original.
These images are not individually identified, but are grouped by box in the Container List of this finding aid. A summary
note for the box lists the transcribed brief identifications found on original paper sleeves. Illegible and mis-spelled names
are common, but may assist researchers in matching scans to identifications. The boxes of nitrate negatives scanned in their
entirety with inadequate item data are: Boxes 2c, 3c, 3d, 4d, 4e, 5, 17d, 18, 18c, 20b, 21, and 36b. A selection of negatives
were scanned from boxes 36, 36a, 36c, 36d, and 53.
Administrative Information
Arrangement
Arranged by photographer's code numbers, which are roughly chronological. Photographer's codes are numeric, with some code
runs preceded by a letter (A, B, etc.). The collection is divided into two chronologically overlapping parts based on negative
size: Part 1 is negatives 4x5 in. or smaller. Part 2 is negatives between 4x5 and 5x7 in. Further separations have been made
within each part for preservation reasons: glass, nitrate film, and safety film are stored in separate boxes. This finding
aid, therefore, follows box number order; consecutive code numbers and related subjects may be found in different boxes due
to the type of negative used.
Processing Information
Collection processing has not been completed. No listings are available for most boxes of negatives.
Scope and Content Note
This finding aid provides a brief listing of a small portion of the photographic negative archive of commercial photographer
Julian P. Graham. In this preliminary listing, the contents of only about 15 out of 188 boxes of negatives have been described,
and these descriptions consist only of short lists of names or subjects transcribed from often illegible notes on negative
sleeves.
The archive is rich in images of sporting and social life in the Monterey Peninsula vicinity, from the 1920s until 1942. Views
include golf courses and golfers, tennis, polo, country club and swimming pool scenes, visiting celebrities and local figures.
Also included are various local scenes and landscapes.
Note
The great majority of negatives in this collection have not been described. Only a small selection of the collection is described
in this finding aid.
