Description
The papers of Marian E. Koshland document Koshland's professional life. Papers contain correspondence and edits to published journal papers and some research, research methods and notes from lectures.
Background
Marian E. Koshland (1921-1997) graduated from Vassar in 1942, going on to earn her doctorate in immunology from University of Chicago in 1949. In 1945 Koshland worked as a researcher on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. In 1949 Koshland moved to Boston for a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Bacteriology at Harvard Medical School. In 1951 Koshland worked as a bacteriologist at Brookhaven National Labrotory before moving to Berkeley in 1965. Koshland was a researcher and lecturer at University of California, Berkeley until 1970 when she joined the UC Berkeley faculty. She was the president of the American Association of Immunologists (1982-1983 ) and served as the chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology from 1982 to 1989. She was head of the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology Graduate Affairs Division at UC Berkeley at the time of her death in 1997.
