The series was developed from a 1959 episode of Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theatre written and directed by Sam Peckinpah titled Trouble at Tres Cruces. The pilot episode aired on Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theatre on CBS as it was one of several western short-lived television shows produced by Powell's Four Star Production Company. This episode was the basis for the feature film Will Penny (1968)which starred Charlton Heston. The episode and the film were both written and directed by Tom Gries.
