Background

Scope and content:

Collection contains records documenting the California Dairy Industries Association's activities between 1923-2010. Materials include meeting minutes, membership and dues rosters, special programs such as the Dairy Roadside Appearance Program records, newsletters and industry publications, contest and prizes documents, conference updates and programs, and leadership manuals. Records are primarily printed materials and documents but a few photos are present in the collection.

Biographical / historical:

Originally named the California Butter, Cheese, and Ice Cream Makers Association, the group officially changed its name to the California Dairy Industries Association during a 1924 meeting and was incorporated in 1949. UC Berkeley had been offering dairy short courses, later called Dairy Industry Conferences, since 1901. The idea to form a California dairy association was proposed at the 1917 Short Course for Buttermakers that took place at University Farm.

The first elected officers were N. Nyborg, president; Charles Ulrich, vice president; and Robert Hatton, secretary-treasurer. The secretary-treasurer position was traditionally filled by a University of California Department of Food Science and Technology (formerly Department of Dairy Industry) faculty member.

The CDIA's purpose was to "promote and advance the education and interests of dairy industry people." The group distributed a newsletter, addressed product quality, organized social events, and provided educational, training, and scholarship opportunities. Sectional meetings were held in different parts of the state and as the dairy industry consolidated, the sections became larger and were divided into the Northern Section, North Central, South San Joaquin, and Southern Section.
