    Abstract: William H. "Bill" Batchelder (1940-2018) was Professor of Cognitive Sciences at UCI. Born in Mississippi and raised in Indiana, Batchelder was one of a generation of 1960s Stanford graduate students who laid the foundations for the field of mathematical psychology. After early stints at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and University of Wisconsin-Madison, he joined UC Irvine in 1970. He was instrumental in the development and creation of the Department of Cognitive Sciences and contributed significantly in establishing the Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences in 1989. He served as director from 1999-2003. He received the Lauds and Laurels Award for Distinguished Research in 1994 and in 1997 was elected to the Society of Experimental Psychologists. This collection comprises documentation on early talks and conferences, research files, material related to the School of Social Sciences and its history, correspondence, NSF and other grant materials, technical reports, course and teaching materials, certificates, posters, a typed copy of his dissertation, and material related to chess (certificates, early score cards, and tournament reports).
