This folder contains two photocopied pages from the original diary of Charles H. Denison who came to California on January 16th, 1849 on board the "Barque Madonna". The ship left New York and eventually laid anchor in San Francisco Bay. The two pages detail a short list of passengers who where on board the ship and gives a short description of the ship leaving New York. Also included is a hand drawn map detailing the Harbor, Bay, and landmarks of San Francisco. These include: Point El Rey, the Friar Rock, noting they are the "first land seen on entering the harbor of San Francisco". On the back of the two pages is a hand written letter, in ink, which was written by one John M. Skutel of Southport Conn. In the letter he is asking for any information on the other passengers listed in the diary and if they where of any significance in early California history. Mr. Skutel notes that "I recently acquired a journal belonging to a Mr. Chas. H. Denison who went to Calif in 1849". The location of the original journal/diary was not able to be ascertained.
