    Biography/Administrative History

    Frank L. Mary appraised railroad-owned lands in California, Nevada, and other states from approximately 1911 into the 1930s. Frank L. Mary was born on September 28, 1865 in Cleveland, Ohio, and attended high school and business school in Nebraska. He married wife Katherine in 1898. The Marys had two sons, Francis N. and William E. and a daughter, Margaret. In 1900, Frank Mary joined the Union Pacific as a right of way agent. After moving to Oakland, California in April 1909, he went to work for the Southern Pacific Land Department as a land appraiser. He became a Senior Land Appraiser for the Interstate Commerce Commission in 1914 and appraised land owned by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, Central Pacific, Union Pacific, and Southern Pacific railroads in California, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, Utah, Nebraska, Montana, and other states. In June 1921, he began working with the Southern Pacific in Southern California. From 1923 to 1929, Mary conducted private appraisals for various railroads. In 1926, he performed a reappraisal of Pennsylvania Railroad terminal and harbor property in Philadelphia for the Interstate Commerce Commission. In 1929, Mr. Mary became a land appraiser for the Western Pacific Railroad. Mr. Mary died May 10, 1949.
