The Fred Harcleroad Papers are a collection of documents created and received by Harcleroad slightly prior to, during, and after his time as President of the University. The collection contains loose leaf presidential correspondences, telegrams, letters, newspapers, speeches, and informational material.

All collected outgoing correspondence during Harcleroad’s time as President of the University is present in this collection, as well as assorted papers (including incoming correspondence) received by Harcleroad before, during, and after his presidency. The collection also includes audio and video interviews of Harcleroad on 2 DVDs and 4 cassette tapes, and scrapbooks assembled during Harcleroad’s Presidency, along with several awards received by Harcleroad.

Biographical / historical:

Fred Harcleroad became President of the University in 1959, before the Hayward Campus was created. He was appointed after having served as a dean at the San Jose State College and was quickly embraced by the student body and faculty as a supporter of education and the Alameda County College (as it was then known). Fred Harcleroad also assisted in the lengthy naming process of the college, the construction of its campus, the selection of its faculty, and the structure of its curriculum. Dr. Harcleroad's interest in A.V. pertaining to teaching made him a forward-thinking man who strove to integrate technology into the college system.

Dr. Harcleroad's primary focus for the California State University, Hayward (as it eventually came to be known at the end of his tenure) was to create a modern university, integrating computers and audio-visual media into the curriculum with a focus on cultural awareness in the form of various multicultural studies programs. Unfortunately, many of these programs either never made it off the ground or were cut due to budget constraints.

Though Fred Harcleroad was supported by the majority of the students and faculty, a vocal minority's slanderous anonymous letters caused Dr. Harcleroad to be reassigned as a professor of higher education and consultant to Chancellor Dumke.
